The hampala barb (Hampala macrolepidota) is also known as the jungle perch although has no classification or morphology similarities to any specie of perch. The jungle perch is a freshwater fish species in the minnows or carps family (family Cyprinidae) of order Cypriniformes (carps), native to the Mekong River basin and the Chao Phraya River basin in Thailand, and surrounding Aisan countries.The jungle perch also known as the hampala barb in its natural habitat would feed primarily on fry & fish such as talipia & Thai tiger perch. Jouveniles would begin life by feeding on plants, nekton & zooplankton.The most distinctive feature is the black bar running vertically down the side of the body between the dorsal and pelvic fins (in adults). The caudal fin is bright red and orange with black marginal stripes on each outside fin ray. The body is silver to golden in colour, very similar to the roach.

黑腰带倒钩体长纺锤形,侧扁,腹部圆,无棱。头较大,约占体长的1/3。吻圆钝,略突出,吻端光滑。吻皮不发达。口端位,口角达眼前缘,上唇与吻皮之间有1条沟,该沟后伸绕过口角须基部外侧向前向内伸折成为唇后沟。左右唇后沟互不相通。口角须长约等于眼径。鳃峡中央有1条深纵沟达口下方。鳃膜相连且游离。鳞较大;侧线鳞26-29。背鳍最后硬刺上半部软而下部稍硬且有时有小锯齿;背、臀鳍外缘均内凹。体银白色,背侧暗绿,背、腹鳍始点间有1垂直黑带纹。背鳍灰黑,其它鳍橘红色,尾鳍上下缘黑色。一般体长60 - 70cm。成鱼雄性的偶鳍、臀鳍及尾鳍为橘红色外,头部及体鳞有许多小珍珠状追星。小鱼尾柄中部及尾鳍基也有较明显的黑色垂直状纹,在尾部臀鳍基前端上方尚有一圆黑斑。
